I want to build a Tesla coil, would it be possible to do so with just coiled wire? do i really need capacitors and other things like this? I understand that two grades of wiring is required for the primary and secondary coils, but i was just wondering if that all I need along with a power supply?

Start here to see what all is involved in building a Tesla coil: Initially, your sole reason for wanting to build a Tesla Coil is to see the fantastic light show they produce. You've surfed the Internet and seen that it's possible for anyone to build a coil, so you're thinking that you want to give it a try.

Required skills: Building a coil requires ability in many different areas of engineering. You will need to work with wood, metal, plastics, adhesives/sealants; use hand and power tools for cutting and drilling; work with mains electricity, wiring, soldering; improvise and modify stock items, perform simple mathematical calculations, plan your coil around what components you can find/afford. And finally, the most important requirement of all is Time! Lots of it!

You could make a small one, but you would still need capacitors to boost the voltage and transfer the power supply. They're not that hard to find, your local Radio Shack probably has a few on hand.

Today there are some quite a few systems you can use to generate free electricity to power your home. You can create different systems which can tape energy form the sun or the wind. There are also magnetic generators which have proven to generate some degree of energy too. But creating a Tesla generator is becoming more and more popular as we speak.
